Waitrose opens first stores in Abu Dhabi

A prominent upmarket British supermarket chain has opened its first store in Abu Dhabi.
The Waitrose supermarket is located in a supermarket mall on Al Reem Island, which is currently undergoing significant development, both residentially and commercially.
Waitrose also plans on opening another branch in Abu Dhabi, as it continues to expand in the United Arab Emirates. It now has eight stores in the Middle East.
This is part of a wider global expansion strategy, which will please British expats moving overseas, especially those who are concerned about missing out on “home comforts”.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Rob Cave, a British expat, explained that when he moved to the island, there was little in the way of shops.
“Now we have the convenience of having a Waitrose a few steps away, a real luxury in the middle of the humid Abu Dhabi summer,” he added.
“I think some people would have expected Waitrose to open up in an already-established shopping centre, somewhere on Abu Dhabi Island, but instead they have got one in a new, up-and-coming part of Abu Dhabi.”
