A Guide to Schools and Transport in Marylebone

Moving to Marylebone means more than just securing a leading Marylebone removals and storage expert. Especially if you’re relocating with your family. If you have young children or teens, then it’s important to research local schools that can provide an excellent, supportive educational environment.

While Marylebone is home to a number of businesses, it is primarily a residential area and caters very well to young families. There’s a good choice of schooling options nearby. As parents or guardians, it’s natural that you want only the very best for your children. And the good news is that Marylebone boasts many educational establishments – along with a range of specialist organisations – that are well regarded and rated highly by Ofsted: the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services, and Skills.

State schools

Marylebone’s state schools are Government-funded schools that accept children from the local catchment area. Many of Marylebone’s primary schools – which teach children aged from 4 to 11 – are faith schools with a religious affiliation. These include St. Mary’s Bryanston CofE, and St. Vincent’s Catholic. The local non-denominational primary school near Marylebone is the Gateway Academy.

There are two main state-funded secondary schools in Marylebone: Marylebone Boys School, and Marylebone CofE for Girls. These teach children from 11 upwards and offer GCSE examinations.

Independent schools

Alongside state schools, Marylebone also has a number of private independent schools that follow their own curriculum. These schools charge term-time fees. Admission is often based on the ability to fund the placement, or on the child’s academic or sporting potential, rather than geographical location.

For boys, one of the most popular independent schools in Marylebone is Wetherby. The Wetherby School is a preschool for boys, while Wetherby Preparatory has intakes in both Year 3 and Year 4. Priority is given to children that have attended Wetherby School. In many cases, Wetherby Prep feeds into Wetherby Senior School for boys aged 11 upwards, leading towards GCSE examinations.

An in-demand independent school for girls in Marylebone is Abercorn School, which admits both boys and girls. This is a through-school, teaching children from 2 to 13 years, and feeds into a variety of 13+ programmes at establishments such as Maida Vale School, Portland Place, and Merchant Taylors.

Specialist schools

Marylebone is also home to a selection of specialist schools meeting the needs of children who may not thrive within a typical educational environment. One is the St. Marylebone CofE Bridge School for girls and boys. This is Marylebone’s leading SLCN (speech, language, and communication needs) and SpLD (specific learning difficulties) school. It offers a compassionate, caring environment for those needing extra support.

Another specialist school in Marylebone is the world-famous Sylvia Young Theatre School. It offers both full time and part-time education for students keen to pursue the performing arts. Children are admitted following a successful audition process, with auditions being held throughout the year.

International schools

If you’re moving to Marylebone from abroad, or you’re keen for your children to receive a more globally-focused education while living in London, Marylebone has two very highly regarded international schools. The first is EIFA, an English-French bilingual school at Portland Place and Duchess Street. EIFA is currently the only school in the UK to teach a full curriculum of all core subjects in English and French. Students from more than 40 different backgrounds currently study at EIFA.

The second is ICS London International School. This was created to provide the highest quality education to the children of diplomats and global business people working in London. To date, ICS London has taught children of more than 65 different nationalities, following the IB Diploma Programme.

However, these are certainly not your only options. Marylebone’s excellent transport links mean you can confidently explore exciting and high-quality education opportunities further from the immediate area. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that you can take the children to school with ease, and that there are simple, straightforward public transport options available for older children to use themselves.

Transport in Marylebone

Marylebone Road, a section of the A501 that forms part of the London Ring Road, runs right through the centre of Marylebone, so getting around by car is easy. Finchley Road and the A5 also lead north towards Cricklewood and the M1, while the A4202 leads south towards Mayfair, Westminster, and the river.

Marylebone is part of the London congestion zone, with fees for driving between 7am – 10pm every day of the week. Many people prefer to use public transport. Marylebone Station, located off Marylebone Road, is the area’s main transport hub. The street-level platforms are served by National Rail, and the lower platforms are served by the London Underground.

Marylebone Underground is a Zone 1 station serving the Bakerloo Line. This runs 14 miles from Harrow & Wealdstone to Elephant & Castle. The station is between Baker Street and Edgware Road, and is on one of the least busy of all London Underground routes, helping to make it a much more enjoyable and stress-free ride. From Baker Street, you can transfer to the Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and Jubilee lines.

Marylebone’s upper platforms are the southern terminus for Chiltern Railways services. Trains run directly from Marylebone to Royal Leamington Spa, Bicester North, Aylesbury, and Birmingham.

Marylebone Station also serves three local bus routes: the 18 between Sudbury & Harrow Road and Euston, the 27 between Hammersmith and Chalk Farm, and the 205 between Cleveland Terrace and Bow Church. All services stop at Old Marylebone Town Hall, too, which is the stop before/after the station.
