How much time should you allow for shipping to Australia?

For a dedicated container 6 to 8 weeks should be allowed for door-to-door delivery. Shared containers or groupage as they are also known, typically take longer at 10 to 12 weeks door-to-door, but have a lower price as you are sharing the container with other customers.

What can you take?

Understanding what to take with you and what to leave or put into store is an important early step when planning your move to Australia. You can download the latest Australian Customs Guide to give you more detail on what you can take when shipping to Australia.

As an overview you can import most household goods and personal effects that you have owned for 12 months or more into Australia duty free. However, they will all be subject to a physical examination by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS), carried out in AQIS approved premises.

These inspections can hold up your belongings for up to 14 working days following the arrival of the consignment. This means that full containers cannot be delivered direct to your destination address. There are standard charges for AQIS inspections based on the volume of the consignment. Your Surveryor will give you details of these prices with your quotation for moving to Australia.

The type of items that attract most attention of the AQIS are items that are likely to have come into contact with soil or vegetation, so think about everything from bikes and garden equipment to table and Christmas decorations containing dried vegetation such as pine cones or leafs. You will need to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned before packing and you may be requested to have certain items cleaned or treated following inspection.

At Cadogan Tate your Surveyor can advise you on what items to take with you and which it might be best to leave behind.

Can you take a car to Australia?

Yes you can – but you will need to bear in mind that all motor vehicles are subject to Customs Duty as well as Goods and Service Tax (GST) in some cases. These vary between vehicles – we can advise you on this if you are interested in shipping your car to Australia.
