Moving to Belgravia school and transport guide

Belgravia is one of the most desirable and prestigious residential locations in London. The elegant rows of stucco townhouses and pretty garden squares are exceptional, as is its location on the doorstep of Buckingham Palace. The grand terraces were designed in the early 19th century by Richard Grosvenor, under the masterful eye of Thomas Cubitt. Many of the houses are part of the Grosvenor Estate.

Belgravia falls mostly in the City of Westminster, with some areas to the west under the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Its central location makes it highly accessible, within easy reach of a number of well-served London Underground stations: Knightsbridge, Sloane Square, Hyde Park Corner and Victoria. Mainline train services are available at Victoria for commuting out of the city. For travelling by car, the main A4 borders Belgravia, as does the London Inner Ring Road.

Despite its grand appearance, Belgravia manages to retain a strong community and small village feel. It’s for this reason, along with the green open space the garden squares afford, that the prime residences are popular with affluent families. The area is perfect for those who want the proximity to central London, without the frantic city vibe. For those moving to Belgravia with children, the excellent choice of schools in the local area is another draw.

Nurseries in Belgravia

There is a high concentration of nurseries and schools in the Belgravia area, befitting of its high-end reputation. With long and competitive waiting lists, it’s worth expressing interest in the best schools as early as possible.

For the very youngest children, The Knightsbridge Kindergarten is highly desirable to give pupils a good start in their education. Catering for boys and girls from the age of two, this establishment is popular with residents from Belgravia, Mayfair, Pimlico and Chelsea. One of its biggest draws is that it has access to both Eaton Square Gardens and Belgrave Square Gardens for Forest School sessions. As well as delivering the highest standard in early years education, it also has strong ties with many leading private schools in the area and will help prepare your child for entry into these.

Miss Daisy’s Nursery is another popular option, with a mission to provider a broad and well-rounded education for pre-school children. Children who attend the nursery move on to some of the best primary schools in the area. As well as covering all the early years statutory curriculum, the nursery offers access to specialist teachers covering drama, singing and sport.

Part of the Eaton Square Nursery Schools, the Belgravia nursery is located on the entire ground floor of 28 Eccleston House. It offers daily trips on a school bus to visit other areas to enable the children to explore outdoors. The other locations are all in fairly close proximity: Eccleston Square, Knightsbridge and Pimlico.

Moving on to Primary education

Many children from the nursery schools in the area will move on to one of the many exceptional local primary schools.

For boys, Eaton House Belgravia is strongly rooted in traditional values and modern approaches to education and technology. In the Pre-Prep school, it educates 4-8 year olds in the academic subjects to a high standard, but also values the arts and science. Many children will move on at age 7+ or 8+ to other prestigious schools in the area. More recently, however, the school opened a new Preparatory School, which takes boys from age 8 with a view to preparing them for the 11+.

Francis Holland Junior School offers high-class education for girls up to age 11. Based in Sloane Square, the school only has a one-form entry to keep numbers small. Around a third of pupils will move into the Senior School on the same site, while others move on to other day schools in London, top boarding schools or international schools. Alongside traditional academic subjects, children can learn ballet, music, sport and science.

Sussex House School in neighbouring Chelsea is located in a Victorian house that has been lovingly restored to its former glory. It has a strong reputation for music, drama and artistic creativity. It caters for boys aged 8-13, preparing them for entry into the best secondary schools.

As a state school option, St Peter’s Eaton Square C of E Primary School is often oversubscribed, such is its calibre in the area. Offering a two-form entry ensures small class sizes and a broad, balanced curriculum. Alongside the traditional subjects, it also offers Latin, violin and PE specialist training.

Secondary schools in Belgravia

There is a wide choice of schools for secondary education in Belgravia. The Francis Holland School is one of the leading day schools for girls. It encourages its pupils to push boundaries and take risks, building future engineers, creatives and entrepreneurs. It also has excellent academic results right through to A-Level. It has modern and innovative facilities on hand for children to explore.

Many children in secondary education will go to schools in nearby districts. The historic public school for boys Westminster School is not far away, in the precincts of Westminster Abbey.

More House School for girls is a Roman Catholic school founded in 1953 in the heart of nearby Knightsbridge. It offers a wide range of extracurricular activities to complement its exceptional academic performance. Art, drama, dance, sport and debating are all available to explore.
