City Guide: Auckland

There are more than a few reasons why New Zealand continues to lure expats to its far-off shores. An island of unparalleled scenery and opportunities to experience the natural world in all its glory, this country also boasts dynamic cities which offer a high quality of life – it’s little wonder that approximately one-fifth of the population began life overseas. If you are considering choosing New Zealand as the destination for a new life, you will find yourself following in the footsteps of not only British expats but contingencies from North America, South America, India, China and the South Pacific. And when it comes to culturally diverse cities, they don’t come much better than beautiful Auckland. Here are a few nuggets of information you might find useful if considering a move there…
Introducing Auckland
Auckland, affectionately referred to as the ‘City of Sails’ due to the vast number of yachts which navigate the waters between the two harbours, has proved a popular destination for expats with its modern conveniences and laid-back seaside ambience. The city’s business opportunities appeal to expats looking to advance their careers whilst the range of leisure activities, entertainment and cultural experiences dotted throughout the calendar win the hearts of families and young urban professionals. The other major appeal of Auckland for expats is that, should city life start to wear thin, you are a mere hour away from the beautiful beaches, picturesque islands and spectacular hiking trails that New Zealand is renowned for.
Working in Auckland
Last year, the World Bank rated New Zealand as second only to Singapore as the best place in the world to start or run a business, and luckily for those looking for employment, most major international organisations with a New Zealand branch choose to set up a base in Auckland.
The top industries in New Zealand are finance, insurance, tourism and business services although it is also worth checking out the Essential Skills in Demand List published by Immigration New Zealand. This list details the roles and skill-sets that New Zealand is in need of and actively recruiting for. If your experience and qualifications meet those on the list, you can bypass the stipulation that in order to take a job in the country you have to prove there are no New Zealanders that are able to fill the position. Common roles offered to expats also include those in the media, construction, engineering, IT and medical industry.
Life in Auckland
The good news first, Auckland’s climate gets a thumbs up if you are looking to escape the chilly winters of the UK. The city enjoys warm, humid summers and though the winters can be wet, they tend to be mild. It is also renowned for being one of the sunniest locations in New Zealand, but do take care to bring warm clothing – at certain times of the year, the sea winds can be biting.
On the downside, the cost of living is comparatively high with accommodation likely to be your biggest expense. However, the road system is well-maintained and there is a selection of decent public transport options that are soon to improve, thanks to major investment from the government.
In terms of quality of life, Mercer recently rated Auckland as the third best city in the world. So, if you are looking to head out of Europe any time soon – you may as well settle at the top.
