Packing & Case Fabrication

Careful packing is key to the transportation of works of art, and our experts assess the nature and condition of each item, as well as its intended mode of transport, before deciding on the most appropriate solution. A team of packing specialists ensures that we are able to design and fabricate bespoke packaging for the transportation of delicate or otherwise exotic works.

Expert Case Construction

Case Options

Standard Commercial Case (2D)

This is our basic two-dimensional artwork case, designed to be used once only to transport a single item securely and safely. We use FSC or PEFC certified wood.   While these cases are used from new for each job, you may safely reuse them. They will eventually, however, degrade.

Standard Commercial Case (3D)

This is our basic three-dimensional artwork case, designed to be used once only to transport bulky, unusually shaped items, or multiple items stored together, securely and safely. We use FSC or PEFC certified wood. The interior includes bespoke packing designed to meet the needs of the item(s) being carried. While we make these cases new for each job, you may safely reuse them. They will eventually, however, degrade.

Full Museum Case

These cases are bespoke made for each job, from the highest quality materials, to hold a single work or a group of art objects. We use FSC or PEFC certified wood, with audited Chain of Custody accreditation, and conservation grade wrapping appropriate to the nature of the work of art.

The case meets all requirements of international shipping regulations, mitigates the risks posed by shock, vibration, penetration and impact, and protects against changes in temperature and humidity as well as against dust, dirt, deposits, water ingress and abrasion. Designed to be safely lifted by both mechanical and manual means, the case’s recessed locking points, bevelled edges and painted finish provide durable protection and security.

Semi Museum Case

Unlike our Full Museum Case, this case is unpainted. It is bespoke made for each job, from the highest quality materials, to hold a single work or a group of art objects. We use FSC or PEFC certified wood, with audited Chain of Custody accreditation, and conservation grade wrapping appropriate to the nature of the artwork.

The case meets all requirements of international shipping regulations, mitigates the risks posed by shock, vibration, penetration and impact, and protects against changes in temperature and humidity as well as against dust, dirt, deposits, water ingress and abrasion. Travel Frame

Our wooden carrying frame for an individual painting. The frame is backed with card and covered with polythene. This is a light, highly cost-effective and practical packing solution, affording the work a very good degree of protection and making for very easy transportation. It’s a particularly popular frame for taking work to and from art fairs and may be inserted on its own, or in multiples, into full cases for further delivery.

A-Frame Case

A secure packing case tilted at a pre-definable angle and used to carry oil paintings that may be subject to paint slippage. An A-Frame is designed and built specially to allow the cased, or soft packed, work to be held at a specified angle during transit. The A-Frame case may also be used to ensure the angle of the painting while the case is undergoing tilting necessary for access to a vehicle, container or aeroplane.

Bespoke Packing Solutions

Not everything we are asked to move is of a regular shape, or robust material. We frequently transport intricate and delicate structures, as well as items fabricated from highly sensitive materials that may include fluids, organic matter, ancient fabrics or film stock, for example. Whatever it might be, we can build a case to move it safely.

More than merely cases

Our approach to packing delicate, fragile or unconventional items is to assess each piece carefully for its individual needs. An item may, for example, require refrigeration units or temperature controlled climates, either because of its inherent nature, or because of the temperatures it is likely to experience in transit.

Once the precise needs have been analysed, our case solution is then constructed to our bespoke specification. Internal structures and packing made of card, acid free tissue, polythene or other suitable materials are inserted to support carefully identified potential weak spots. Whatever happens, the integrity of the work is preserved.
