Frequently Asked Questions
What time will your staff arrive at my house?
8.30am to 9.00am if in the London area, subject to traffic conditions.
How long will the packing take?
This varies according to volume and an estimate will be provided on your quotation sheet.
How long will the staff be at my house?
Usually from about 9.30am until about 4.30pm.
Will the same crew pack and deliver my goods?
If the consignment is moved by container the answer is no.
If you are moving directly to mainland Europe (and not in a part load) then usually one or two of the staff will be the same wherever possible to provide continuity.
How long will the door to door removal take?
If the consignment is being shipped, the transit time will vary according to the destination. The shipping time can be advised, however the time required for customs clearance can vary considerably and is outside our control.
If the move is to mainland Europe, then allow approximately one travelling day per 400 miles. If to Switzerland add about half day for customs clearance.
What items may I NOT take?
If you are moving to the USA, Australia or New Zealand you may not take foods.
Alcohol attracts import duty and its presence can cause delays at customs Unless it's of particular value we recommend that you leave it.
You can't take anything inflammable or corrosive. This includes empty gas cylinders, paints etc. We recommend that you take no household cleaning products.
Can I take my car?
If you are moving to Australia then yes. An import permit from Canberra has to be obtained prior to shipment and the car must meet all Australian standards. Upon arrival in Australia the car will be subject to import duty, tax & GST.
If you are moving to the USA the answer is no if the car was purchased outside USA. If the car was originally exported from the USA and is being returned by the same owner, the car can be imported but will be subject to EPA test (Environmental Protection Agency).
How will my car be shipped?
We recommend that cars are shipped inside a steel shipping container. However, they can also be shipped on Ro-Ro services. The car must NOT contain any effects. It will be driven on off the ship by dock side staff.
Can I take my pet?
If it's a dog or cat then yes, It will have to meet the health regulations of the destination country. We work with a specialist pet transport agency and can provide more information on request.
Do not plan to fly your pet to a hot climate during the mid summer season. For example, pets will not be accepted in Houston between June & September.
Will my UK electrical items work overseas?
Where the destination's electrical system is 220 – 240 volt the answer is yes.
Where the electrical system is 110 volt then no. However, in some cases a transformer can be used but be careful; if the cycles are not correct this can lead to a motor turning at an incorrect speed. Transformers are not recommended for appliances that draw a high voltage such as heaters, irons, kettles etc.
Will my TV work?
The UK has a PAL system but unfortunately it's not the same PAL system as Australia so TVs will have to be altered in order to receive Australian TV reception. VCR & DVD Players will have to be reset and then have to be compatible with the TV.
What happens about custom clearance in the country of destination?
If the move is to an EU country then there is no customs procedure.
If the move is to a country outside the EU, then the Cadogan Tate partner at the destination country will provide the customs forms to be completed.
It is usual for you to be required in person at the destination at the time of the arrival of your goods, to present your passport to the local customs office. At this time you will also need to have ' entitlement to reside'; have a residence visa; or be a National of the destination country.
In the USA, a photocopy of the principle passport page will be required.
It's wise to build in time flexibility for customs clearance.
We will provide the required inventory for the consignment.
Is it Cadogan Tate at my destination or do you use agents?
We carry out household removals all over the World, for many large corporations, diplomats and the public sector. We are part of a worldwide network and we have a local trading partner at your destination that is fully qualified to handle all aspects of the custom clearance, storage if required and delivery to your new home.
Why should I insure my goods at an extra charge? Don't you pay for breakages?
We go to a great deal of trouble to ensure our staff are properly trained. The company is FIDI FAIM approved so that the correct method of packing is used along with top quality packing material.
FIDI sets the industry standards and provides consumer protection guarantee. However your consignment is subject to handling by third parties such as road transport, shipping lines, foreign customs agents etc, so whilst every endeavour is made to ensure the consignment is handled correctly, sometimes accidents do happen. We have limited liability cover. (FIDI – International Federation of International Movers

Is the insurance subject to an excess or deductible?
No. There is no deductible or excess applicable to the insurance cover arranged by Cadogan Tate.
Will you be able to disconnect electrical appliances?
If it is a case of pulling out the plug then yes. If it has to be disconnected such as a chandelier then the removal staff are not qualified electricians and therefore are not allowed to disconnect these items. This is in line with the requirements of Health & Safety at Work legislation.
In this scenario, we can provide our own electrician who will remove the chandelier light fitting or wall light, then either blank off the wiring or fix up a pendant and bulb so there remains light in the room.
Can your staff disconnect washing machines and/or dishwashers?
Yes, providing that it is just a tap and providing the tap works & has not seized.
Our staff are not qualified plumbers so it would be your responsibility to ensure that there is no leakage of water.
Can your staff remove goods from the loft?
Yes, providing the loft is properly lined and safe to stand on and there is a suitable ladder and light.
Can your staff use webbing to pull up or let down a piece of furniture through a window or over a balcony?
The safety of our staff is paramount. A risk assessment will be made and If possible an outside elevator will be used. We have our own outside elevator to assist where awkward items have to be moved in this way.
