Canada gets to work on immigration system

Canada is putting a temporary hold on new applications to its Federal Skilled Worker Programme (FSWP) and its Federal Immigrant Investor Programme in order to make the changes that are necessary to modernise its economic immigration system.

The "pause", as it is being described, will give officials the time needed to update the system so that it is faster, more flexible and able to process a large number of applications, professionals moving to Canada will be interested to learn.

These changes are part of the country's Economic Action Plan 2012. Some of the changes proposed under this include improving the selection of federal skilled workers; removing the backlog of FSWP applications; and changing the "Canadian Experience Class" to make it easier for temporary workers to move to permanent residence.

"This temporary pause on new Federal Skilled Worker applications will allow us to set the programme on a new course as we intend to launch revised selection criteria soon," said Mr Kenney.

"The pause has no impact on the number of workers Canada admits into the country, as CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) continues to process applications already received. Current immigration remains at historically high levels."
